Once i get appointed a public defender for a DUI can I get a lawyer later if I choose?

i would like to know my options with the public defender first before wasting my money on a high priced lawyer. how can i go about this? Can public cheap drugs no prescription defenders reduce duis to a wet and wreckless or am i better off hiring an attorney for that? This is my first DUI in CA.
