My grandson was arrested and charged with DWI in Clinton County NY. Is it necessary to hire a lawyer?

Can a lawyer reduce the charge / jail sentence? This is his first time offense – just messed up – really good kid.

You should get a lawyer. My son had to go to weekend jail because he had a **** poor lawyer. He was young and had no other offenses.
You absolutely should consult with an attorney. If this is his first offense and there wasn’t any injuries or damage, the chances of a jail sentence are pretty slim.
Yes, please do hire one, but before you do that you might want to be up front and blunt with your grandson. We all like to know that our family members are not doing anything illegal, but sometimes that is just family always looking at their grandchild as that little kid who could do no harm. I trust I was clear about my response. Good luck!!!
It’s not necessary but it’s advisable.
A lawyer might be able to get the charges reduced.
Even for a first time offense he should have a lawyer for a DWI. Having said that this good kid will have a suspended license for a while … see sources for more information.
I would try
